GRATERFORD PRISON

Did you know….
My Daddy Might Not Be Able to Work on the Graterford Prison Project
in Montgomery County?

This would be discriminatory and is being promoted by Ed Rendell
& DGS with your hard-earned tax dollars.

The facts...

A construction job should be about value, quality, safety, training and experience, NOT about being a union member. The Pennsylvania Department of General Services (DGS) is planning on constructing a $400 million addition to the Graterford Prison. We also understand that DGS and Governor Rendell have decided that this project should be built using only union construction employees, which excludes more than 75% of local construction employees -- those who choose not to join a union. This is un-American and just plain wrong.

The Graterford Prison project is being funded with your tax dollars to the tune of more than $400 million.  Well-trained and highly experienced construction workers are being shut out of this project even though their hard-earned tax dollars are paying for it.

What can I do?

You can make a difference!  Let PA County and local officials know that you oppose discriminatory union only project labor agreements (PLA’s).  We urge you to tell them you support fair and open competition, oppose Philadelphia-style, union-only PLA’s in and demand that construction on Graterford Prison be open to all qualified contractors without regard to labor affiliation.

Want to learn more about PLA's?

PLA’s have a long history of being more expensive, causing more problems than good, and discriminating against the majority of the construction workforce across the nation. Visit our PLA Facts Page for more information.
